Miguel Ferreira
Founder & Principal Engineer
Miguel Ferreira is a Portuguese software engineer based in Amsterdam with a Master's degree in Computer Science from Universidade do Minho. Over the past 16 years, he has moved between research, hands-on engineering, and engineering leadership -- always staying close to the code while taking responsibility for the outcome.
His career started at the Software Improvement Group (SIG), where he spent four years researching software quality, performing ISO 25010 quality audits for enterprise clients, and publishing five peer-reviewed papers on software maintainability and evolution. As part of his research at SIG, he created the SEFLab (Software Energy Footprint Lab) at the Hogeschool van Amsterdam, to instrument servers and measure how different choices at the software level influence energy consumption. That research foundation -- measuring what makes software actually maintainable -- still shapes how Functorful approaches every project.
From there, Miguel moved into mission-critical engineering at Schuberg Philis, building CI/CD infrastructure for Apache CloudStack where 100% uptime was the contractual standard. As Partner and CTO of Utilis, he built a team from zero to six engineers and led delivery for the Dutch National Lottery's multi-region platform and LVNL's air traffic control modernization. At Backbase, he worked as Principal System Engineer on bank provisioning at scale. At GRESB, he grew from Senior Engineer to Head of Engineering, leading a team of 15 engineers and maintaining a zero-outage track record over four years for the global ESG benchmark platform.
Miguel maintains over 145 open-source repositories, has published five peer-reviewed papers, served on the Codemotion Amsterdam 2018 Program Committee, and has guest lectured on software engineering. He speaks Portuguese natively and English at full professional proficiency.
